Big Brother 24 Twist: They Almost Got It Right [Op-Ed]

If you tuned in for Thursday night’s episode of Big Brother 24, first of all, I’m sorry, but then you know there’s a new twist under way.

What Julie called the “biggest twist in Big Brother history” has divided the house into two groups. There are now two groups of five houseguests, each lead by their own Head of Household. One group gets to live inside for the week, while the other gets to slum it in the back yard. There will be two nominations for each, two veto competitions, and of course two evictions.

On paper this is a really great twist. It feels a lot like an International Big Brother twist, which we rarely see here in the US version. I love the idea of two games going on at once, and one group being punished for no real reason. We never need a reason to see our houseguests suffer!

And from what I saw on social media, a large number of fans were also ready to see this twist come. But then they let us know they’d be coming up with the two sides of the house by schoolyard pick. And the whole twist just flew out the window. Why would the not have the teams be decided randomly? Why would they give the two Heads of Household the power to choose their own teams. Not only does that not lend itself to prevent any kind of steamrolling, it also kind of unfairly allows someone to pick their target. I actually don’t mind the latter part, but I think the rest is just bogus.

As you know from watching the episode, Michael and Terrance are the two HOHs. Michael is the inside HOH, Terrance is the outside HOH. They both have their silly BB Fest names, but I’m not going to even acknowledge those titles. I think this theme is silly and frankly embarrassing. This is why I don’t tell most people I watch Big Brother, let alone write about it!

So why am I so against the schoolyard pick? Well, for starters, Michael and Brittany didn’t get split up, nor did Kyle and Alyssa. Sure, there’s a chance that they wouldn’t have with random draw, but at least there was a chance. And now Kyle and Alyssa are likely going to both make it out of this twist because Terrance doesn’t seem to understand how bad of an idea it is to leave a showmance in the game. But now I’m getting off track.

I also think this twist would have been better earlier in the season. The fact that there are two sides with only five members it can get very messy much like it does at the Final 5 when HOHs sometimes have to watch their closest allies go home. I am fine with that happening at Final 5, because that’s part of Big Brother. But that happening TWICE at Final 10 is just a little bogus.

So I applaud the idea, but not the execution. Big Brother US often ALMOST gets it right, but rarely gets it totally right. Sigh.

What do you think of the twist?
