Big Brother 17: Nomination Anticipation In Week 12

What a mess of a night in the Big Brother 17 house as the new HoH went on a nine-hour streak of running laps through her head and the house desperately searching for her latest “reason!” before sending two Houseguests to the Block.

How do you break down nine hours of circular logic? Well I won’t because I think we’d both go mad, but I’ll give you the latest on the plans for today’s nominations which are coming up rapidly thanks to the fast forward week on its way to the house.

When Feeds returned last night Vanessa wasted no time going in to overdrive. She visited with all four remaining Houseguests and interrogated all of them in less than thirty minutes of the HoH comp ending and Feeds resuming. Vanessa was on the hunt for her much needed “reason!”

Vanessa went to Austin and asked what he thought other HGs were going to do if they had won HoH. She poses the same question to Liz, then to Steve, and then to John. Everyone says the other side said they’d target someone else. Vanessa excitedly proclaims each instance as support to her cause of generating valid claims for nominees.

Here’s the problem with her circular logic. Five HGs remain including two pairs, more or less, and one third wheel (Vanessa) on each. If, for example, Austin talked to Steve he’d say he’d target John and Vanessa then John would have to tell Austin he’d target Liz and Vanessa. You can’t say you’re going to target your own ally or the person you’re talking to. It’s all been bull passed around, but Vanessa would like to use it as legitimate conspiring. Come on now.

Initially we heard Vanessa tell Steve that Austin was her target and she told Austin that Liz was her target for making a deal with Steve to break a tie in Steve’s favor. Again, that was a bogus discussion where Liz was trapped in to agreeing with Steve so he’d vote how she wanted.

Eventually Vanessa talks to Austin long enough to get to the point of explaining why he should fear Liz being there before circling around to making John and Steve the noms if Austin and Liz promise to throw round one of the final HoH to her. Seriously? Of course Austin agrees and later so does Liz.

Oh, Vanessa also got Austin to promise to throw this Veto and said she might test that promise with her noms, implying that Liz would go up. Vanessa was getting Austin to agree to every possible scenario so she could do whatever she wanted. It was absolutely exhausting listening to her spastic conversations.

Later in the night Vanessa was settled in a track of loops with Austin and Liz that she’d send John and Steve to the Block if Liz and Austin agreed to a series of conditions including voting how she wanted and throwing competitions to her later on. Part of Vanessa’s justification for putting John up is that John’s family did air guitar in their video message that we saw in last night’s episode and she says that must mean he has a deep rooted alliance with Steve called “Rockstars.” (Steve had already told Vanessa about it.)

I hope John’s family doesn’t feel bad over that because I’m thinking this just a bogus “reason!” she’s using in the moment like when she told Austin the HoH basket photo of him doing gymnastic rings with a gay friend was a secret message from his family that he needed to “hang with his gay friend.” That being Vanessa. Or how she got a shell with a sticker on it in her HoH basket which meant her family wanted her to “stick with Shelli.” Someone call Nurse Ratched.

Eventually Steve talked again with Vanessa where she explained that while it seems obvious and smarter to target the showmance she thinks she needs to target the loose pairing of Steve and John. Sure, that makes sense. Vanessa claims to Steve that she knows John would take Steve over her to the end which makes her too nervous to keep John around. Hang on. Rewind.

Earlier in the night John spoke with Vanessa and told her that he was worried about Steve sticking around because Steve would be harder for John to beat at F2 than Vanessa because Steve was well liked while Vanessa was hated. Ouch. Maybe you shouldn’t be so honest about your strategy, John. Vanessa then later used that line with Austin suggesting John might try to spin her situation in that light. She’s now prophesying to others based on past conversations. Sheesh.

If this review of last night feels like an utter mess than just imagine having watched it for hours. It was maddening. But for now the takeaway is we should expect John and Steve to go up on the Block. But is John really the target? Ehh, I’m not convinced.

Minutes after the Feeds returned last night and before Vanessa started telling everyone the other HGs were her target I projected Steve & John would be the noms but she’d be going after Liz instead. Vanessa might have to settle for John as a plan C, but I think she has to know there are higher value targets in the mix.

Vanessa still does not have a real F2 deal with Liz like she does with Austin, Steve, and John. For yet another round I’m looking at this thinking it’d be crazy for Vanessa to let Liz and Austin stay together. While Austin seems more loyal to her, I suppose an isolated Liz wouldn’t team up with Steve or John like Austin might, so maybe she would want either to go. Or maybe I’m giving her too much credit.

What do you think Vanessa should be doing in this situation? The noms aren’t the end all this week with so few options and Veto deciding a lot. It’s more interesting at this point to try and figure out where Vanessa is aiming her sights this round and rather frustrating that we’ll have to wait until deep in the night to know more.

As a reminder, the Feeds will go down at 9:45 AM BBT for fourteen hours of darkness before returning around 11:30 PM BBT. This is likely being done so production can speed up the nominations and Veto competition with the “surprise” eviction on Tuesday which isn’t a surprise when the HGs know it’s coming. When everything returns we’ll get nomination results and the more important Veto comp results.
