The Best And Worst Moments Of Big Brother 19 Week 1

That was one long first week of Big Brother 19. We had evictions, a self-eviction, an injury, tons of drama and and backstabbing. Thankfully, I already covered the Best and Worst Moments from Premiere Week, so we can stick to what happened since in this edition of Ewws & Ahhs. So let’s go!

Cody Nickson thinking of his next move

Eww. Megan Walks. It already seems like forever ago since we learned that Megan removed herself from the game. I respect Megan for going public with her reasons why, but I still can’t support anyone leaving the game ever, much less Week 1. I don’t care what anyone thinks about me feeling this way either. All I know is Cameron wanted his spot and she gave up hers. And you know who else would have loved her spot? Me and millions of others. It’s just hard for me to overlook. I’ll never understand it.

Ahh. Cody And Alex. Even though Cody nominated Alex to fill Megan’s place on the block, it’s clear she was the last person he wanted to go after. Cody has this obsessive respect for Alex and it’s really funny to watch. What makes it even better is Jessica’s obvious jealousy.

Eww. Paul Wins The Pendant of Protection. It wouldn’t be a season with returnees without some kind of protection. I hate when it becomes so obvious that production doesn’t want their expensive vet to go out too early. It’s just annoying and it also splits the fandom. More on why this is such an Eww later.

Ahh. Alex wins the Veto. I originally wasn’t much of an Alex fan, but she’s grown on me. I think it happened the moment she said “if you want a showmance, go on The Bachelor.” She just seems like she’s here to play so I’m happy she got the chance to save herself.

Eww. Cody Can’t Make The Move He Wants. Thanks to the Pendant of Protection, Cody’s game came to a crashing end in the first week. He wanted to nominate Paul after Alex saved herself, but that wasn’t allowed. So not only was Cody’s bold move squashed, he lost his alliance in the process. I understand a lot of people don’t like Cody and I understand why, but what happened to him this week really wasn’t fair. And yes, I know, since when is Big Brother fair? I just like the game to be more organic than it is when these twists are in play.

Eww. Christmas Breaks Her Foot. The only thing worse than walking on your own is being forced out by an injury. When Christmas left the house for medical attention, it was beginning to look she could be pulled from the game.

Christmas down after her injury on BB19

Ahh. Christmas Returns. Even though her foot is broken, the producers left it up to her whether or not to remain in the game. She decided to stay. She won’t be able to play in very many competitions, but she’s going to continue her fight in the game.

Ahh. Jillian Is Evicted In A True Blindside. At the start of the season, I ranked Jillian in last place for me as far as likability and watchability, so I was pretty OK with her leaving this week. Plus it made for one heck of a great blindside. We haven’t seen a shocking eviction in years (thanks James Huling)! Jillian was shocked. Cody was shocked. Jessica was shocked and livid. And since Kevin flipped on his side of the house, there’s going to be a lot of finger pointing in the coming days.

Eww. Julie Didn’t Mention A Battle Back. Will this season not have a returning player competition? If not, then why hasn’t Cameron surfaced on social media? And why didn’t Julie reveal any secrets or goodbye messages to Jillian duringĀ her eviction interview? So many questions!

What were your favorite and least favorite moments of the week?

  1. From now on, BB should play the sound of Christmas’s foot breaking instead of those stupid jingle bells when they mention her name!

  2. ‘Cody can’t make the move he wants’ was an Ahhhhh moment for me. Don’t blame production. If he hadn’t thrown the veto, Alex would have been out, his alliance would be intact and his blood pressure would not be elevated. That old saying Pride goeth before a fall is so true and Cody needs to get that ego in check.

    • It might not be “fair”, but Cody was well aware that there was some kind of twist in play — he went into the Den the same as everyone else, and he should have been aware that production was likely to protect Paul if possible. My favourite moment of the week was the poleaxed look on his face when he realized he wasn’t going to be able to put Paul on the block after all.

      • I don’t know… the look on his face when the votes were revealed last night might just eclipse that one.

    • perfectly said…what an awesome week…once again, nothing is predictable, and i love it.

  3. Cody did it to hisself. He didn’t have to try to put up Paul then turn around put Christmas up. He could have put Jason up like his alliance wanted and he wouldn’t have lost anything. Production had nothing to do with his downfall; Cody’s big ego did.

    • Makes me kind of feel bad for Jillian. I can’t imagine any other scenario in which she would have gone home, other than what happened.

    • Besides, even if Cody had been allowed to nominate Paul, it still would have shot his alliance to hell.

      • you think so? I don’t necessarily think so. The alliance still could have stayed strong and Paul is a huge threat. I don’t think it was a stupid move for Cody to put up Paul but it was definitely a very stupid move that I still don’t understand, Cody putting up Christmas

      • It’s possible it wouldn’t have done as much damage but still a good bit I would think. Especially with him making the move without telling anyone what he was about to do. There was no need to turn on his alliance so early and it makes him look so untrustworthy that even if it hadn’t destroyed the alliance it would have caused some serious doubts for a lot of people.

      • Yeah that’s true. It’s so hard to trust people as a HG on BB so when people show their “cards” this early in the game, he’s showing his alliance he cannot be trusted. Stupid move!

    • I agree although I do think it was unfair because Cody already had to re-NOM because Megan self evicted. I still don’t understand exactly why Cody put up Christmas. Perhaps he was just in shock LOL wasn’t thinking! I doubt that but, he should’ve said that.
“Oops sorry Christmas, I didn’t mean to see your name, I was completely blindsided and totally lost my train of thought” LMAO šŸ˜‚
& once he realized just how badly he pissed off his alliance members and also as soon as he realized Paul had safety, he should have put up Jason. That was definitely his fault! Did he honestly expect his alliance members just to be cool with him putting up two of their alliance members. Meaning Paul and Christmas.
I get it, Cody went in there to play and play hard & ideally for him putting up Paul was best for his game so I did find it unfair that it was a secret. That’s the only thing I feel bad about for Cody. Oh and because he had to Re-nom after Paul and he had to re-NOM after Megan so he did have to show his cards pretty quick. But I guess again, he didn’t have to! He could’ve put up Jason.
Sorry, I sort of spoke in circles in this comment. LOL

  4. Yes – the goodbye messages! I wondered last night why Jillian didn’t get any. I understand she might be sequestered in the event of a Battle Back. But I think in the past, early evicted houseguests did get goodbye messages.

  5. If you want an organic game as you say then why are you even watching Big Brother? It makes no sense.

    • Because once upon a time, twists did not exist. It was simply a game of manipulation and comps.

      • So true! And I miss that game. Some of the twists are OK and entertaining but some of them are completely unfair for one or more of the houseguests. I haven’t agreed with them/the twists since they introduce them.

    • Yup! I don’t agree with these twists. Some are OK/entertaining and don’t necessarily harm one specific player but some of these twists I find completely unfair and make it impossible for some of the houseguests to play an organic game.

  6. One of my big ‘Ew’ moments was finding out what an inconsiderate douche bag Jason is. He caused Christmas’ accident which broke her foot and after notifying PROD, he just disappeared. Didn’t help her into the house, offered no consolation, didn’t greet her when she returned from the doctor or the MRI, offered no words of encouragement and was ‘happy’ yo vote to evict her. Chickenshit.

  7. Aww: Someone finally turns Mark to keep Xmas – Dominique
Eww: The Show completely ignores this making it look like he came around on his own

  8. Excellent assessment, Branden. Because as much as we all love to complain about Cody, there’s no denying that in any other season, his plan to nominate Paul would have gone off without a hitch. This Den of Temptation twist is going to take strategizing to a whole new level. While this is definitely not a bad thing, it’s going to screw several people over before the end of this season. Cody was not wrong to target Paul – Paul’s not just a vet, he made it all the way to the F2. He may not be the fan favorite BB makes him out to be, but he is definitely someone who can make it all the way to the end if given the chance.

Now, does this mean Cody’s plan was flawless? No, absolutely not. He shot himself in the foot when he failed to let his core alliance members in on the plan. Sure, Mark knew it was coming, and Jessica had been given hints (don’t let this week’s episodes fool you), but the others were left in the dark. Not a smart move by Cody.

And let’s not forget that on top of the craziness caused by the twist was the unprecedented number of nominations this previous week. No HOH has ever had to nominate a third of the house in one week. It’s usually just the initial noms and a possible replacement nom should someone come off the block. Instead, we had a HG self evict and an injury threaten to remove a player from the game all in the same three or four day time span. This entire first week was trial by fire for them all, and sadly, many were burned. Here’s hoping that things can start to settle down now (at least a little bit).

  9. I could not have said it better myself Brandon! I šŸ’Æ%agree with you on how unfair it was for Cody not to know about Paul’s safety. He already had to re-NOM because of Megan self evicting. Cody’s game play although partly his fault was exposed way too soon, and I also don’t think it was fair! At all! Yes big brother is not fair but like you said, I do not agree with certain twists big brother throws out there. Paul being safe is fine, it is what it is but he should have had to reveal it. Totally unfair for Cody!
Curious, why did Megan say she self evicted? I guess I can Google it :-)
