Big Brother 20: Why This Is The Best Season In Years [Op-Ed]

We are heading into the fourth eviction of Big Brother 20, and the honeymoon phase hasn’t ended yet. We are still loving the season, and that hasn’t been the case the past several seasons.

Big Brother 16 never took off. Big Brother 17 had a good start, but fizzled fast. Big Brother 18 was dead on arrival when four vets literally climbed out of suitcases and into the cast. And then there’s Big Brother 19. I’m not even going to comment on that polarizing season. I want to wipe it from my memory.

And before I get into why Big Brother 20 is so good, let me make sure you don’t think I’m saying Big Brother 15 was the last great season. No, no, no. Not saying that. I just want to forget all about BB15. So I’m going to say Big Brother 14 was the last great season. It was definitely the last season that actually had good vets that didn’t contribute to ruining the season.

So why is Big Brother 20 the best season in years? Let’s break it down.

The Cast: Well, first of all there are no veterans. There was no stunt casting – no siblings of past HGs, no pop star siblings, not even any a rodeo clown. And the cast is good (for the most part), proving that we don’t need familiar faces to make a good season. Again, that hasn’t worked since BB14.

No Stupid Twists. Another reason it’s so far, so good is that there aren’t any stupid twists like Battle of the Block or Roadkill. The BB App Store was barely a twist and it’s already over. And the powers given out actually have added to the drama, so I’m OK with that twist.

A Divided House. Remember last season when it was like 12 against 2? That was terrible. People were throwing competitions and following Paul’s every command. It was just so bad. This season, we’ve had an almost perfectly divided house with a couple of people riding the middle line. We haven’t had such a divide since Big Brother 6. And the power has actually shifted back and forth kind of nicely. Of course one of the alliances can’t really get their stuff together because they messed up when they made Kaitlyn a part of their group, but it’s still been fun to watch.

Blindsides. There have been three eviction and three blindsides. And even though it’s early in the week, there might be a fourth blindside coming this week! Every week, the person expecting to stay has actually been evicted, resulting in many, many dropped jaws. And how the votes are going to play out haven’t even been that obvious to us. Usually we know exactly who is going home by Wednesday at the latest because of talks on the Live Feeds. This season, people are still flip-flopping up until Thursday when the feeds go down for show prep. I love an unpredictable season.

No Showmances. Aside from the broken-up showmance of Swaggy C and Bayleigh there are none! And I love that. I know producers think everyone loves a good Big Brother coupling, but I don’t and many others also don’t. So it’s refreshing to not have two or three pairs off laying in a bed all day long. People are always actually up and about the house plotting and scheming.

The Drama. We haven’t had a tong of huge fights (even though the biggest one happened on live television last Thursday), but there hasn’t been a day without drama since the Live Feeds started. People are always crying, plotting and scheming. Kaitlyn alone has kept the entertainment value at a 10 this season. She’s just always upset about something and overreacting to something. It’s just really entertaining.

The Live Feeds. This goes with the drama section above. But the Live Feeds have been more entertaining this season than in a long time. The HGs aren’t allowed to sleep all day any longer and they’re a group that really likes to talk game. If you aren’t signed up for the Live Feeds, this is the season you need to get on that. It’s still early and there’s still a lot of season left.

What do you think of Big Brother 20?
